Unidos da Filadelfia Samba School now has a base here. Learn to play
and perform the irresistible rhythms of Brazilian Carnaval! All instruments
provided. No experience necessary.

Instructor Michael Stevens has studied, taught, and performed Brazilian
percussion for 15 years. During frequent trips, he studies and performs with
some of the premier samba bands in Rio de Janeiro. He is the founder and
music director of the 24-piece Brazilian band PhillyBloco – catch them at
World Café Live and elsewhere. He is also the instructor for the University of
Pennsylvania’s Brazilian Ensemble. Michael founded and is the musical director
of Dignity Housing Youth Drumline and Unidos da Filadelfia as well.
Samba school Unidos da Filadelfia (Philadelphia United) is modeled after
Carnaval parade organizations in Rio de Janeiro and Salvador da Bahia.
Founded in 2005, its mission is to spread the joy and excitement of Brazilian
percussion through education and performance. Participants play traditional
instruments, learn the rhythms of Brazilian Carnaval, and perform at community
events. Classes at MaMa are affiliated with the school.
